Stable Diffusion 4 (SD4) is the newest release from Stability AI, representing a major upgrade in open-source image generation. SD4 uses a new architecture based on diffusion transformers (DiT) that dramatically improves prompt adherence, text rendering in images, human anatomy accuracy, and overall photorealism. It generates 2048x2048 images natively and supports aspect ratios without quality loss. The model runs locally on consumer GPUs (8GB+ VRAM) or through cloud APIs. SD4 introduces built-in ControlNet capabilities for pose, depth, and edge guidance, plus a new consistency mode for character sheets and style preservation. The open-weight model lets developers fine-tune on custom data.
Model weights are free to download and run locally. Stability API charges $0.03-0.09 per image depending on resolution and settings.
