AI coding assistant that runs in your terminal
OpenAI Codex CLI brings AI-powered coding directly into your terminal. Unlike browser-based assistants, Codex CLI operates in your local environment with access to your file system, git history, and development tools. It can read codebases, write complete implementations, run tests, fix bugs, and handle refactoring. You describe what you want done in natural language, and it generates a plan, writes the code, and optionally executes it with your approval. Launched in early 2025 and significantly improved in 2026, it now supports multi-file edits, interactive approval workflows, sandboxed execution, and integration with CI/CD pipelines. It is open source and works with OpenAI API keys.
The CLI tool is free and open source. You pay for OpenAI API usage. GPT-5.4 costs approximately $2.50/MTok input, $10/MTok output.
